The older child in aggressively red shorts and black Mary Janes stands with his back turned to the baby on the floor, apparently consulting a calendar tag marked 'Dec. 25' as if filing a grievance — leaving the younger one, swathed in white with a blue ribbon nearby, to gaze upward with the hollow stare of a child who has seen things. The real villain of this card is the closing line printed at the bottom — 'Now don't you wish you'd been good?' — which is less 'Christmas sentiment' and more 'psychological warfare delivered via postcard,' signed off by illustrator Ellen Clapsaddle, who apparently moonlighted in festive emotional manipulation.
