Victorian Cherubs & Red Heart Valentine Card, 1890s

Like a Renaissance painting crossed with a modern over-the-top Instagram aesthetic, two chubby cherubs — one sporting a jaunty yellow skirt and tiny wings, the other suspiciously underdressed — flank a heart so aggressively red and enormous it looks less like a symbol of love and more like a cardiovascular emergency. They're surrounded by an absolute avalanche of pink roses, because apparently subtlety died sometime before the Victorian era. The clothed cherub on the left is cheerfully brandishing roses overhead like she just won a parade float competition, while her companion on the right clutches two smaller red hearts with the quiet desperation of someone who knows they're the backup gift.
