Victorian Valentine's Day Greeting Card with Red Heart and Cherub

What strikes a modern viewer immediately is the sheer aggression of this composition: a winged cherub crouching in the corner like he's just finished a crime, clutching a dangling red heart while gazing down with the suspiciously knowing expression of someone who absolutely did not ask for consent before firing that arrow straight through the enormous red heart dominating the card. The wreath of blue forget-me-nots framing said stabbed heart is doing a lot of heavy lifting here — because when you think 'I love you,' you naturally think 'I have literally impaled my feelings and surrounded them with flowers so you cannot escape.' Pink roses spill aggressively across both sides of the card, because apparently one floral element wasn't sufficiently overwhelming, and the script reading 'To my Sweetheart' at the bottom lands less like a tender inscription and more like evidence in a restraining order.
