Victorian Christmas Postcard Father Christmas Green Robe Star 1900s
Text on Card
A Merry Christmas
Description
A snow-dusted Christmas tree bough adorned with a radiant starburst candle holder, holly sprigs, and bright berries frames this richly detailed chromolithograph Christmas postcard presenting Father Christmas in his traditional European guise. Clad in an earthy olive-green hooded robe and carrying a bulging sack of toys, he holds an assortment of colorful gifts including red boxes and golden ornaments, with a pipe resting in his white-bearded mouth. The central vignette is set against a bold six-pointed star that dominates a deep teal, star-speckled night sky. The layered composition, rich jewel tones, and meticulous rendering reflect the high craftsmanship typical of German chromolithographic printing houses that dominated the holiday postcard market in the early twentieth century. A delicate spider motif appears in the upper right corner, a traditional Ukrainian and Eastern European Christmas symbol of good luck.
