A merry Christmas and a happy New Year

Description

Distinctive for its layered symbolism, this Victorian-era Christmas and New Year greeting card features a cherubic winged cupid in a yellow outfit playfully holding an oversized red heart while sitting beside a wicker basket overflowing with hearts, clovers/shamrocks, and greenery. A bird (duck or similar) perches on or near the basket, while charming symbolic elements of good fortune—a horseshoe at the base—evoke themes of prosperity and romance during the holiday season. The soft color palette of muted greens, warm oranges, and pale pastels is characteristic of chromolithographic printing from this period.
