Vintage Halloween Greeting Card with Woman & Purple Flowers

The proportions of scariness to pastoral serenity are wildly off-balance on this card, apparently because someone at the Edwardian greeting card factory thought the most terrifying Halloween imagery was a woman in a cream gown crouching in a garden to gently touch some flowers, which — sure, fine. Her reddish headband is doing absolutely nothing spooky, and yet here she is, anchoring a Halloween card beneath a banner flanked by aggressively purple thistles that are clearly the only ones in the composition who got the 'this is a horror holiday' memo. Outside the central vignette, what appears to be a green bat or dragon swoops in from the right, suggesting the artist remembered at the last second that this wasn't just a pastoral garden postcard. 'With Best Wishes' it says, in cheerful multicolored letters, because when you think Halloween, you naturally think a woman fondling begonias while someone wishes her well.
